Just hours after Pathfinder landed and the microrover vehicle- -named
Sojourner- -drove onto the planet's surface, the first images of Mars
appeared on the JPL Web site, projecting the planet's color, atmosphere,
topography, and texture to millions of Internet-connected homes and
businesses. Near-real-time technology captured images and data, sending
the compelling views to Earth in just 11 minutes.
Science and technology had taken yet another giant leap
for mankind by providing millions of people with worldwide images of the
Pathfinder mission's microrover path across the Martian terrain--images
made possible with the help of powerful Silicon Graphics 3D and Internet
server technology. |
